LIFESTYLE | 7 Things To Expect From Freshers Year

Seven things to expect from your Freshers Year - University advice, what to expect from your first year
Going into Second Year at the end of September, I've been looking back at my time as a Fresher. I know some of you may be starting Uni soon too, or a small few may even have started your first year already, so reflecting on my First Year, these are some things to expect from your freshers year..

1 // YOU WILL LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Sounds beyond daunting, even for me now at the thought of doing it again. For my close friends, it's very difficult to believe, but I am an extremely shy person when it comes to meeting people for the first few times. So starting uni (especially somewhere over 200 miles away from home) was bloody terrifying to tell you the least. But honestly, if you bite the bullet and just go for it, you will get so much out of your 'uni experience'.

2 // YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT YOUR GRADES

Queue disapproving looks from parents/teachers/lectures. Oops. For most courses you only need 40% to pass your first year. I'm not saying 'aim for 40%', but you have got quite a lot of leeway. First year is a year that doesn't count, it's there on purpose, so you can settle in to your new surroundings, make new friends, get used to the new format of learning and your new course. Don't panic if it looks like you're not on course for a Solid First, you have plenty of time for that in second and third year.

N.B. Please disregard point 2 if you're doing a course where first year actually does count. I really don't want to be to blame for a failed degree and thousands of pounds basically flushed down the drain...

3 // YOU WILL HAVE MUCH MORE FREEDOM

You can go to bed when you want, you can watch films all night, you can have dinner at 2 in the morning, you can get back really late from a night out and sit up chatting with housemates til the sun comes up (literally on some occasions). Also, you can and will eat some weird stuff. And that goes for drinks too. I don't know what it is, but for some reason living on your own (for a lot of people the first time in their lives) with a bunch of other people of similar ages to you, you will get in the habit of eating weird things for every meal of the day.
Seven things to expect from your Freshers Year - University advice, what to expect from your first year

4 // YOU WILL MEET SOME OF YOUR BEST FRIENDS FOR LIFE

And probably some people you can't wait to be away from forever - time to thank god for getting into a uni thats so far away from home you can scuttle back to where you came from and never have to stumble across him/her ever again. Some people that you like at the beginning of term could end up being your best friends. Some people you think could be your best friends could end up being people you never want to see again in your entire life. The friendships made at uni are unlike any other you've probably ever and probably will ever experience in your life. Although after only spending a year with them, who knows if I'll still enjoy my friends company after the whole three years... Just kidding, love you guys x

5 // YOU'LL WANT A JOB. GET A JOB. HATE THE JOB.

Contrary to popular opinion I know, but, if you can afford not to, I wouldn't recommend getting a job. But if you need to, or really desperately want a job, I'd definitely leave yourself some time to settle in at least a bit, get your bearings before you decide to enter employment. Maybe avoid a bar/pub job, as you'll be working the hours you want to be out in the bars and pubs, and barely ever get to see all your great new friends I mentioned in point 4. (Although nights out with bar staff usually are some of the best nights out, but that's beside the point..) If you do decide to get a job make sure both you and your employer know what hours are expected, if you're wanting to go home for the holidays, what your uni timetable/commitments schedule is like. It avoids confusion, and messy situations in the future. Believe me, I've been there.

6 // THERE WILL BE A POINT WHEN EVERYTHING GETS TOO MUCH

And that's fine. It happens to the strongest, toughest people. Even the people that seem like the steady rock of the group. Being away from everything familiar, your family, your home friends; it's a really weird situation to be in frankly honest. Everything is new and different, it's only natural it's going to put a strain on you. Don't worry if you need to call your mum at 2 in the morning (although I can't promise she'll be overly happy about the timing...), don't worry if you need to book a spontaneous trip home. Sometimes you just need to be a bit selfish, and no one can/will blame you for that.

7 // IT WILL MOST LIKELY BE A LOT OF FUN

But don't worry if its not. I've spoken to loads of people who have said second/third year have been their best year at uni. It's completely different for everyone. If you're having a really sh*t time, there are always people you can talk to, things you can do, new people to meet. But then I've also spoken to an equal number who have dubbed first year as one of the best years of uni/their lives. Could be something to do with the uni work not actually counting maybe..?

Those of you who have experienced your freshers year, do you have any tips of what to expect for freshers? Good luck if your going into Freshers year, it'll be great!

Maybe this time next year I'll come back to you with my tips for second year...

STYLE | The Ultimate Transitional Dress ft. BooHoo #WeAreReady

Ultimate Transitional Dress - A denim dress from boohoo.com styled for summer, swinter and autumn seasons. Featuring ASOS, Zara, Primark, H&M, New Look, fashion, style, lookbook #WeAreReady
As much as I hate to admit it 'Swinter' is most definitely a thing. If you're not such an avid reader of fashion magazines/blogs as I am you may not be familiar with the term. It's a term used to describe the depressing fact the Britain's weather systems have failed to realised it's summer - therefore resulting in us receiving much more winter-like climates. Swinter.

Anyway, onto more positive things.

boohoo.com have recently launched their new campaign #WeAreReady - ready for Autumn/Winter, and why we can't wait for summer to be over. Don't get me wrong I do love the summer, and when it's properly warm I love wearing shorts and crop tops and the works. But I know deep down I'm more of a autumn/winter gal. My wardrobe is mainly made up of jeans and jumpers, and I love a good coat. Along with cosy nights in, big blankets, big blanket scarves and those crisp cold mornings.

Moving onto the dress. Oh the dress. It's so preeedyy. Going back to the whole Swinter thing, I thought I'd do something a bit different and show how I'd style the dress for Summer, 'Swinter' and Autumn. This is one of those dresses that works so well as something to get you through the changing seasons. The ultimate transitional dress. And because its denim it's quite warm on it's own a.k.a. perfect for British weather in general.

SUMMER

Because technically it is still summer, it's apparently August?! Ha. So if the British weather gives us another glimpse of sun, this would be my look. I've gone for my favourite sunglasses, obviously, sandals, another obvious pick and the cutest little bag - dreaming of being city chic. If only I could be wandering down gorgeous streets of London townhouses rather than posing in my garden. Sigh.

THAT WEIRD MIDDLE TIME a.k.a. SWINTER

This look is to take you through into that weird time of year where the weather's like "is it summer? is it autumn? I don't really know, I'm going to do a bit of both". Keeping with the 70's trend, I've layered the dress with a high neck top, a skinny scarf and a pair of little black boots.

AUTUMN

Moving on to slightly colder times, I'd add a longer sleeved top, tights and (my beloved) fedora hat. This is probably my favourite look - lucky for me as this is probably the one I'll be wearing most from now on. I'd probably chuck on a leather jacket as well on an especially chilly day. York is really not the warmest of cities.

Whack on some thicker tights and a big coat, blanket scarf and maybe even some thigh high boots - I will buy some this year - and it would even take you through to Winter too.

Is this travel? Is this lifestyle? Who knows?

Anyway, a week or so ago, I took the train journey from York all the way down to the West Country – it’s a bloody long journey I’ll tell you that much – to meet my family down in the village of Dittisham in Devon. My great-great-great-(great?)-granddad used to be the ferryman here, so my family have a very very (very?) long-established connection to the little village.

I was there for under a week but boy did we eat (and drink) a lot. There’s an incredible cafĂ© called the Anchorstone looking over the river which does the BEST seafood I've ever tasted. Then a short ferry ride away is the town of Dartmouth which has lots of boutique shops, quirky cafes and a market to wander round.

Although theres not much going on in Dittisham, it's such a lovely place to go for a few days to get away from everything, it's just so calm and idyllic that it just makes you feel so relaxed and stress free while you're there.

Have you been away in the UK or abroad on holiday recently?

Seventeen 'Stay Pout' in Infared - Available in Boots

I’ve never worn lipstick. Not unless you count when you’re in year 8 and go into town with a load of mates after school and get told off for using the testers directly on your face. Or was that just me?

I’ve just never found it suited me. But that could potentially be due to my inability to apply it correctly. Or being able to find the right shade for my skin tone. Until a fateful summers day (good god, this is starting to sound like a fairytale) when I found myself in Boots and something told me (read: my housemate told me) to buy this Seventeen beauty.

A Stay Pout lipstick in the shade Infared. It’s an incredible deep slightly purpley red, with amazing pigmentation. Who’d have ever thought those words would come out of my mouth? Not me that’s for sure. What makes it even better is that I had enough points on my Boots Advantage Card to pay for it. Forever a bargain hunter.

Now I know this title is a little over dramatic. It hasn’t really changed everything, my life hasn't been completely catapulted in the air, but it’s certainly changed my views on wearing lipstick. I just feel so chic and cool with it on (yeah, a bit cringe I know).

N.B. yes my face is wonky and no I cannot take a sensible photo of myself. Therefore there is no photo of me actually wearing the lipstick. There may be a sneaky selfie on Instagram, so keep an eye out at @ellieetc

Have you tried out Seventeen's Stay Pout lipstick?

TRAVEL | Grand Cayman Part II

*First off, a massive apology at the ridiculous space of time between part I and part II of this post. I've been waiting on some photographs to complete this post, which has been the main reason for the hold up!*

Here's another post I've taken YEARS to write the follow up to! YAY! If you've not read the first part, you won't know that recently I was lucky enough to go to Grand Cayman, one of the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean with some of my family. Check out the first of my highlights over HERE, and then here are my last few favourites:

Snorkelling with turtles at Spotts Beach: This first photo looks edited, which it is, but I kid you not this is actually what it looked like snorkeling  the photos just didn't do it justice. It will never fail to amaze me how incredibly clear the sea can be. Turtles are definitely a favourite animal of mine, and we even saw a baby one. Queue unbearably high-pitched SKWEEE sound.

The sunsets: All pretty much the same, but all just as beautiful.. My poor iPhone quality photos don't nearly do them justice!

Some of the food and drink: a.k.a. cocktails. Many many cocktails.

*Some of these photos are curtesy of my lovely cousin*

We managed to get our hands on some disposible underwater cameras while we were there. I've not got mine developed yet. Shock horror. But if I do actually get round to it in the next century/they turn out well, I will share them with you in a sneaky 'Part III'. But then again, looking at the timings of the first two posts, you may be waiting a while.. My bad..

Have you been anywhere nice on holiday recently?

I love ASOS. As I explained eloquently in a recent post HERE all about my sale/outlet picks. I just can't get enough. That combined with late nights and being sat around the house a lot due to unemployment = spending. Spending I probably can't afford, but spending my heart and inner shopaholic desperately wanted (needed even? No, I'm exaggerating now).

It’s very unusual for me to do an online order and not send anything back. I’m stupidly indecisive and picky – it’s a surprise I have any clothes really. Ha. But this order was just perfection.

I’ve been after a pair of boyfriend jeans for longer than I can remember. Due to my body being highly annoying in the fact that my legs/hips/bum are a sold size 10 whereas my waist is an 8. So the whole boyfriend/mom jean never really worked on me, always due to that fact either the legs being perfect and the waist massive or visa versa. Although saying that a belt is still a requirement with these. But. Eleven pounds. ELEVEN POUNDS. Who could say no to that?

I think the rings go perfectly with my opal stacking rings I got for my 18th. I love wearing rings, I usually prefer sterling silver, but these were just too pretty to resist. And the top is just super cute *insert sassy girl emoji here* definitely one to whack out for Bestival at the end of the summer. Lovin' dat 70's theme. Oops. It got weird.

Have you been shopping in ASOS recently?

Before you say it, I know I know, this is stupidly overdue. For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm on about, back in the day (read: back in March. Eek.) I did Part I to these "Ways To Wear White Jeans" posts - check it out HERE if you've not seen it yet - promising to do another part.. Weeell, life got in the way/lots of other post opportunities popped up/I'm super lazy. But finally it's here!

For Part II I've gone for a 70's look, as we can't seem to get away from that trend at the moment - aside from the fact that I love the trend too.

I just really love how all of these pieces look together, I think the length of the top works really well with the jeans. Also the length of the jeans with the boots just works too. I adore the low back/backless style of the top as well actually. Basically I just like this entire outfit(/my back), okay?

I think the fur gilet is perfect to add a sense of excitement(?) to an otherwise bog standard outfit. The hat is a Primark find, but one I barely wear as I'm more partial to my fedora, as you'll probably know... Although it helps to round off the 70's look of this outfit. The low back Zara top is one of my favourite pieces of clothing. The low back is just so cool and more interesting than most other camisoles out there.

What do you think of the 70s trend? How would you/do you style white jeans?

N.B. I'm still trying to figure out how to use my camera, hence why the exposures/colour balances/focusing is all a bit out.. I will improve I promise.
